Our Story – The History of In-Room Plus

Wanda Jones and Michael Amrose were operating a small research marketing company in the late 1980's, when a friend asked them to market his chocolate chip cookies to hotels for their minibars. During their research for this project, Jones and Amrose were surprised to find that there were no hotel minibar suppliers in the U.S. Upon discovering this service void, the pair decided to make a career shift.

In October of 1990, In-Room Plus, Inc. was born in a small office in Williamsville, New York. Jones and Amrose began calling hundreds and hundreds of hotels. They were able to define their client list and solidify their business plan. Starting with gourmet cookies, In-Room Plus quickly built a product list that included gourmet cheeses, candies, chips and bottled waters, and began distributing these items to hotels all over the country.

By 1993 the company moved to a 1,000 square foot office space in the Tri-Main Building in Buffalo, NY. And in 1994, after packaging and distributing the products of others, the company began manufacturing their own specialty minibar items, beginning with the Picnic Pack. In 1995, they expanded to 5,000 square foot multi-room office/warehouse/production suite, where they also began packaging many non-food minibar items, such as First Aid, Shaving, and Toothbrush Kits.

In the late-90's, In-Room Plus had an explosive expansion. Jones and Amrose were becoming nationally recognized, and were quoted in publications such as The Wall Street Journal and USA Today as being "minibar experts". During this time, In-Room Plus had expanded to a 14,000 square foot manufacturing and distribution suite. They also introduced their exclusive line of minibar snacks in a can, called Banana Moon®.

By the year 2000, In-Room Plus had developed a product list of over 300 items, which were being distributed to four and five-star hotels from coast to coast. They had also acquired a total of 17,000 square feet of production space, and began to automate production of their Banana Moon® line with a mechanized packing system. This mechanized packing system would double the shelf-life of the product line. Wanda Jones was also interviewed and quoted in the April issue of Fortune 500 magazine on the success of the company's recently debuted Intimacy Kit.

In 2002, In-Room Plus expanded in a new direction when they began customized product development for Westin Hotels. This line of products, created specifically for Westin minibars, won a Bronze Award in the 2004 NACD Packaging Design Competition, and is now a minibar standard for all Westin Hotels in North America.

Today, In-Room Plus distributes minibar-specific products to hotels across the globe, and occupies over 20,000 square feet of office/production/warehouse space in Buffalo, as well as a warehouse/office in San Francisco, CA. They have "Preferred Minibar Vendor" contracts with major hotel chains such as Starwood Hotels & Resorts, and Avendra. Selling over a half-million cans in 2004, their exclusive Banana Moon™ line now consists of 16 different snack products for the 3rd generation of label designs.

As the "One-Stop Shop for All of Your In-Room Bar Needs" In-Room Plus is the leading provider of minibar products and has an ongoing commitment to service and quality.
